Commentary
Imaginative pairing of textures and colors, found in the
central characters of this work, lend a sense of organized chaos to a
piece which would not remain merely pastoral. The two people, or peasants,
have different skintones (white and black), and stand at the forefront
of this open window into the farmlands, covered in reflective or etched
prints which resemble Egon Schiele's decorative patterns. Such colored
panels which frame the piece add visual interest to an already full scene.
Note the white dove on the shirt of the woman to the left. Anatomy here
is not rendered realistically, and the two figures might also make good
puppets, proudly standing before their happy fields. Note the bright weather
in the background and the textures of the animals and flowers. The image
in totality seems to say with all our differences, surely we can live
harmoniously together.
