CommentaryThe grasslands of Benin, with heat and with shade, are evident in this sketchlike painting by Emile. One can always look at the shape and model of cars on the road in a work to date the drawing. Here the cars are angular and fleeting, perhaps racing to town. There are many items of technology, from roof antennae to satellite dishes, lending a sense that the inhabitants are connected to modernity even in this picaresque drawing. Thereis a shock when one notices what looks like a skeleton in the right foreground of the road. Or perhaps it is just the coloring of the road. The largely frontal orientation of this work could even appear as an aerial shot of modern Benin. Even so, it is a world where past meets future in an harmonious accord.
