Commentary
Alexandro has depicted, in this thickly colored and shaped piece, a militant
faction seemingly at ease among the grass huts of his country. See the
main figure, a dictator, shown in profile with half a face, no doubt shouting
orders to his subordinates as they wait for the next move. The neutral
coloring of the hands here fade so that they are almost invisible. Is
this Alexandro's way of saying the militia has a toothless presence there,
and that they are not well-liked? Indeed, for what reason do the soldiers
come? See the land and livestock ravaged at the whim of the soldiers,
the grace of the foliage upset by the intrusion. The soldiers have very
erect postures which gives the group of men a nervous tension. The dictator
is speaking to a plainclothes man. no doubt a farmer (and with a whole
face), and there is a sense of tense minutes before action.
Alexandro's rendering of perspective is nearly perect here, lending the
sense of what a large country Argentina is. Ghostly shapes and half-shapes
fill the reaches of the paper, suggesting the mutilation of which the
soldiers are capable. One feels that the soldiers are unwelcome and at
odds with the natural tone of the country. Perhaps the stage is set for
an altercation about the ownership of the land.
